Gas, coffee, cigarettes and gum

I wake up tired
I work all night at the Mobil
downtown by the stadium.
People step up
And order through the window,
gas, coffee, cigarettes and gum.

Jenny’s gone when I get home,
we got married young.
One thing I learnt is
you never really know someone.

This kid comes in around 2am every night
tells me his name is Manuel.
Hip hop blasting
his girl’s there in the front seat
all made-up and beautiful.

I saw her once in the daylight
talking and crying on her phone.
One thing I learnt is
you can’t tell when people are all alone.

Truckers, cops, security guards and lost souls,
I treat ‘em all the same.
When the clubs close out there it’s like a party,
some of ‘em even ask my name.

Jenny and I don’t talk about it but something’s changed,
and I don’t know what.
One thing I learnt is
you can’t tell
what people are dealing with.

I’ve seen dodgy deals, broken heels and fistfights,
and one night out there this kid got killed with a gun.
The cops came and I closed up early
wandered around the stadium.

I watched the cranes down on the wharf
the place lit up like a sun.
One thing I learnt is
you can’t tell when your time will come.

I wake up tired,
I work all night at the Mobil,
downtown by the stadium.
People step up
and order through the window,
gas, coffee, cigarettes and gum.

Greg Fleming and The Working Poor Auckland, New Zealand

Greg Fleming is often referred to as a pioneer of alt country in New Zealand. One of his first gigs was supporting Texan legend Townes Van Zandt, afterwards Van Zandt took him aside and told him “don’t ever stop writing” . Greg didn’t and has six critically acclaimed albums bear out Van Zandt's belief. The new album Same City continues to show Fleming operating at the peak of his powers. ... more
