Uber Never Came (single)

by Greg Fleming and The Working Poor

/

about

Hot on the heels of 2016's acclaimed album To Hell With These Streets comes a new track from Greg Fleming - another collaboration with Working Poor guitarist Andrew Thorne (aka DJ Stingy Brim who also produced the single Life is Short from THWTS).
Uber Never Came - inspired by a trip Fleming took to California last year - mixes electronic/hip hop with rock riffing and sharp lyrical observations.

lyrics

Uber Never Came

Didn't get no sleep
headphone leak
high-hats and bass beats
static in the en-suite.
Aspirin and Ativan down at the buffet
girl on CNN
says it's all gonna be ok.
Nobody watches tv anyway
They took out the minibar
like I'm still in AA.

Hanging on the phone
I can't get home
Click bait blues
Revolution on the avenue.
Bad news comin' down from the capital.
Land of the free baby that shit's unmappable.
Ford with a roof rack,
can't see it anywhere
GPS fuck that-
can't you see I'm drowning here?

Uber never came
I'm waiting in the rain.
Man with a walking cane,
gave me God on a key chain,
but Uber never came.

Uptown's a mess
blood on the court steps,
banger fires drunk rounds
widow in a wedding gown.
# chitter chatter
Black Lives Really matter
doorman from Alabama
plays a mean piana.
I don't feel great
something I should've ate,
right about now I need the
vodka in my suitcase.

Uber never came
I'm waiting in the rain.
Man with a walking cane,
gave me God on a key chain,
but Uber never came.

Walkin on the freeway
airport's 10k.
Girlfriend ran off
It’s a Mexican stand-off
iPhone don't roam
can't even call back home
cop cars en masse
black kids hit the deck
guys in the taco truck
quickly packing up
just like a movie
but nobody’s acting tough.

Uber never came
I'm waiting in the rain.

Greg Fleming and The Working Poor Auckland, New Zealand

Greg Fleming is often referred to as a pioneer of alt country in New Zealand. One of his first gigs was supporting Texan legend Townes Van Zandt, afterwards Van Zandt took him aside and told him “don’t ever stop writing” . Greg didn’t and has six critically acclaimed albums bear out Van Zandt's belief. The new album Same City continues to show Fleming operating at the peak of his powers. ... more
